CLIENT ALERT: PROTECT YOUR BRAND NAMES ON FACEBOOK

June 12, 2009

Facebook recently announced that it will allow registered Facebook user’s to associate a personalized username for displaying, searching, and providing access to their Facebook pages. Facebook’s prior policy was to associate Facebook pages with randomly generated sequences of characters. In order to protect the rights of registered trademark owners, Facebook has announced that it will allow users that own a registered trademark to register the mark with Facebook. By registering a mark with Facebook, the mark will not be associated with a Facebook account, unless the Facebook account is maintained by the owner of the registered mark. Registering a mark with Facebook may be accomplished by completing and submitting a form provided at http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=username_rights, before Saturday June 13, 2009, when the facebook “land rush” for usernames will begin.

Subsequently, on June 13, 2009, owners of registered trademarks may also want to login to their accounts and follow the steps to associate a desired username with a specific Facebook account.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding the announced change in Facebook’s policy.
