OSHA LIANG HOSTS FIRST PATENT PARALEGAL SEMINAR

Osha Liang hosted the first in an on-going series of educational seminars for patent paralegals at its Houston office on July 8, 2010. The seminars offer in-house patent paralegals of major corporations a network to exchange information and ideas. Twenty-five people attended the seminar, and the group was a mix of experienced patent paralegals and people who transitioned into intellectual property within their company without prior IP experience. Partner Tom Scherer spoke about recent trends in Information Disclosure Statement practice. After the presentation, the discussion was opened to attendees to suggest topics to be covered at future seminars. The seminar was so successful that the group agreed to meet on a quarterly basis with a combination of educational lectures and roundtable discussions.

Feedback from the attendees was universally positive, and it was agreed that the diverse group is a valuable resource for one another. Potential future topics include e-filing practices, a discussion on PAIR, e-office action program, customer numbers, foreign patent practice (including formalities, legalization, regulations of different patent offices, and requirements for foreign inventors to first file in their home country), annuities, PCT practice, software geared to the IP industry (docketing, document assembly, etc.), patent vocabulary (including acronyms and definitions), foreign associates, the handling of file transfers and intakes, paperless office, educational courses available on patent topics, and dealing effectively with outside counsel.

The next luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, 2010. If you would like to attend or want to be included on the mailing list, please contact Kim Kennedy, Docketing Manager, at kennedy@oshaliang.com.
